Bring your group or class on an educational and entertaining excursion to our Puppet Studio & Classroom!

We offer standard and customized Field Trips for youth, adults and people with special needs. Every field trip includes a puppetry demonstration and a short hands-on craft workshop.

FOUR STANDARD WORKSHOPS:

Rod Puppets

Learn to build and animate simple rod puppets. This type of puppetry can vary widely in its level of difficulty and complexity, from the simplest 2-D rod puppet to a more complicated 3-D piece with moving parts. Rod puppetry can be integrated into any curriculum to enhance learning and storytelling.

  • 1.5 - 2 hours
  • Grades K - 12
  • $6 - $7 per person
  • $120 - $140 minimum per group

Toy Theatre

Is your class talking about family history, science or a wonderful story? Are you teaching a section on animals or heroes? There are endless possibilities for toy theatre to enhance your class’s curriculum, learning, and fun. Students will each build a small stage and puppets to bring a story to life with sound and movement.

  • Grades K - 12

Hand Puppets

Students will discover the vibrant and creative world of hand puppets in the art studios of a puppet theatre! Each student will build his or her own hand puppet and will be given great tips on how to bring it to life with sound and movement.

Mask Making

Make simple masks of animals, people, monsters, and more! Each student will use everyday materials to create a unique mask.

Details About Field Trips

  • Instructors are chosen from our highly skilled roster of artists and will rotate depending on availability and area of expertise. There is a minimum fee for each workshop regardless of the size of your group.
  • You must provide 1 adult for every 10 kids attending. These adults play key roles in making the workshop run smoothly and getting the most out of the curriculum.
  • There is a maximum of 30 kids per workshop.
  • You can opt to include a tour of our theatre and studios for an additional fee.
  • We know that each group has different needs. If you don’t see what you are looking for in our offerings, we are happy to design a workshop or series of workshops specific to your group’s interests, curriculum, time constraints, etc.
  • Extend your visit to Midtown with a meal or snack. Many excellent eateries are within short walking distance of HOBT. Ask us for recommendations and special discounts! Download a store directory & map of Bloom-Lake business district.

All camps, classes & workshops are held at HOBT’s new Studio on the 3rd Floor of Plaza Verde, 1516 East Lake Street, Minneapolis.

Plaza Verde is the green building next to HOBT’s Avalon Theatre. Free parking is available in the Plaza Verde lot behind the theatre (enter on 15th Ave).
