Education: Summer Camps
Observe and sketch the creatures of Powderhorn Park. Do you see a heron? A snapping turtle? A worm? Through sculpting, papier mache, and paint, create a rod puppet of your favorite urban wild animal. The first day of camp will include a walking field-trip to Powderhorn Park.
Create a trick, a magic hat, and a rod puppet of your favorite magical character. On the last day, we will perform a magic show!
Puppet Parade! Learn the basics of parade performance - create flags, costumes, masks, instruments & finery! Everything you need to parade through the neighborhood and make a joyful noise. Celebrate!
We will pick out poems about water and translate them into secret dioramas boxes. Only one person at a time can view them, so we call them peep-boxes. These poetry peep-boxes will be displayed at the HOBT Water Carnival on July 26 where all are invited to celebrate water and our glorious new water fountain.
Capture the shade to make a stunning shadow puppet show about " a day in the life" of YOU! It's a hot time in the summer, in the city - illuminate your story!
Learn to stilt walk in a week! And learn the basics of fire-spinning without the fire. Camp will culminate in a collaborative choreographed stilt performance.
Experiment with the properties of water, solve mysterious problems, and learn some basic building mechanics, all to create an original carnival game using Minnesota's most bountiful and precious resource, WATER! Each student will take home a game of their own creation, and the larger group project will be used at HOBT's Water Carnival on July 26 when all are invited to celebrate and enjoy water!
Use your creativity to collaboratively write lyrics and a catchy-tune about that flowing, bubbling, freezing, gurgling, life-giving liquid - Water! Students will work with a professional song-writer and performer to create beautiful music and then sing their hearts out with the help of puppets at HOBT's Water Carnival - a celebration taking place on July 26, the Saturday following the camp.
Learn the basics of composition, drawing, and painting in this camp that will focus on creating murals of water in it's many forms. These fabulous works of art will be displayed in a community art show honoring water at In the Heart of the Beast Theatre, and then sent home for the campers to treasure.
If you could go anywhere with anyone, where would you go and who would you go with? Create and illustrate the journey of a lifetime on a homemade, hand cranked old-fashioned TV that we call a "cranky-box".
What makes a hero? Can anyone be a hero? Create or re-tell the story of a hero and his/her adventures using the puppets and toy theatre that you design and make!
Design, sculpt and sew your own mermaid, troll or monster bunraku (doll) puppet. Then learn some basic puppet movement skills to bring your puppet to life in a simple scene which we will present on the last day.
Sculpt the face of a creature-of-the-sea, then use papier mache and paint to create a mask. Before the end of the week, campers will be experts on performing as their animal!
