With Joy!

Intensive Training Workshop

Explore movement technique and content development within the laboratory of the low-tech/ high-imagination methods of In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.

Participants will focus on movement techniques and performance creation that rises from the whole ecology of a stimulating urban neighborhood, the news stories of the day, the personal stories of the participants, and the transformative realm offered by puppet and image theatre. We will also study the historical significance of the various techniques explored, and what it means to build performance of community relevance, of questions, of compassion, of joy.

This 2011 session will include the following topics: The Eclectic Dancing Hand (hand puppets), Figures Find Breath (hand-held and team-held puppets), Enter the Skin (beginning mask work), and Between the Lines, Beneath the Faces (newspaper toy theatres).

Each day will consist of a six-hour session, with the remaining hours available for open studio and research. Participants will develop several short performance pieces during these weeks. Simple construction techniques will be offered toward the development of these pieces, but the focus of the session is on building a foundation of movement, breath, gesture, content development, and situation of performance.

The workshop will be led by Sandy Spieler, Artistic Director of In the Heart of the Beast Theatre (HOBT), with additional support from HOBT artists. The sessions will take place in the studios of In the Heart of the Beast Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This is an urban community setting, with lots of diverse food options and second-hand shopping, close to a park, on good public transportation lines, and not far from the Mississippi River and a chain of swimmable lakes.
