Built in 1937 by renowned architect Perry Crosier, The Avalon is a renovated
movie theater that's been home to In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and
Mask Theatre since 1988. Ideal for music, dance and theater events and
presentations.
Lake Street Social Center
(formerly Celebration Hall )
Lake Street Social Center is a beautifully restored, two-story ballroom
located on the third floor of Plaza Verde at 1516 East Lake Street. Built
in the 1930's, this former Masonic lodge seats 200 and features a 50
x 70 sprung wood dance floor. Ideal for family celebrations,
corporate events and, of course, any kind of dancing!
Location & Neighborhood:
HOBT's Avalon and the Lake Street Social Center are located in south
Minneapolis at 1500 and 1516 East Lake Street, respectively, one block
west of Bloomington Avenue. Across the street is the vibrant Mercado Centrale,
full of authentic Latino food and goods. Four blocks to the west is the
new Midtown Exchange building, in the former Sears tower, and its Midtown
Global Market (international foods and gifts), while Ingebretsen's Scandinavian
Deli & Gifts--an
80-yr old Minneapolis institution--is two blocks east.
